Commanders Project, 2018-19
This year for the Commanders Project we will be supporting our Detachment Commander's Project, which is "The George Grossnickles Scholarship" for a Boys State participant. This is the first year for this project so we need to help support it and spread the word for it. George Grossnickle served the Sons of The American Legion as its Liaison to the American Legion and was on the SAL Commission for many years. In 2017 we lost George and, to honor him, the Detachment of Maryland is creating a scholarship that will be given to a young man the participates in Maryland Boys State each year.
Boys State is a American Legion Program that is carried on in most states and it teaches government to young men that have just finished their Junior year in high school. Here in Maryland, they go away to McDaniels College and stay for a week. During that week they learn and elect using different departments of government. Later each year, in July, each sends its representatives to Washington for Boys Nation. The program has enhanced the lives of many young men. We believe that helping them as they go on in a higher learning that we too can help enhance their lives.
